Corporate Sponsorships are Great Funding Sources

In Grant Secrets Without the Redtape From a Nonprofit Specialist: Parts 1+2 I gave a little grant training and I spoke about the ins-and-outs of the grant protocol. Another source of funding is one or many corporate sponsors.

According to an article by www.councilofnonprofits.org, this is what it is “corporate sponsorship support is a payment by a business to a nonprofit to further the nonprofit’s mission that is generally recognized by the nonprofit with an acknowledgment that the business has supported the nonprofit’s activities, programs, or special event.”

In short, how corporate sponsors work, you, the business, has the idea, program, etc that the corporate sponsor is looking for, the corporate sponsor has the funding to give your business in exchange for a partnership of your idea.

During the 2019, 2020 Pandemic there were more small businesses on the rise than any other time. The problem many of them faced was having the funds to start the biz or the nonprofit, but not having more sustainable income to keep it afloat. This became a problem as we would see businesses rise then suddenly dissolve.

Right Now there are corporate sponsors who want to fund your idea, business, nonprofit, church, event, project and program. corporate sponsors also can help supply in-kind donations, supplies instead of monetary awards.

Now is the best time to partner with a corporate sponsor!

Imagine This

Imagine this, you own a bank and a client comes in and asks to withdraw a large sum of money. Before this transaction can be made you are doing your investigation.

You discover this client is set up on automatic bill pay, but never have enough funds in their account and you see several overdraft fees. They have many credit cards, but all maxed out or a high balance is owed. Lastly, they are asking to borrow this large amount of money (either from their account or loan), with all this information that you gathered, would you still give them the loan?

Before getting to the end I felt a lot of you screaming “NO!” You have successfully followed the pattern – if they can’t manage their own money well, it’s not possible for them to manage your money well. It’s the same thing with compliance. If your business isn’t compliant then it’s impossible for a matching corporate sponsor to partner with you

Increase your Funding by 49% with corporate sponsorships

I don’t have, yet, the konami code to get unlimited funding through corporate sponsorships. I’m an advocate for compliance, it sets a strong foundation so your business can thrive. Compliance makes you more noticeable to the corporate sponsor for this reason. It might be boring, but this is the surest way to get to that 49% rather quickly in your business.

Wherever you are in your Business, a startup the first 1-3 years. Perhaps you’ve already gotten funded but you need more funding. Or simply, you are familiar with the process of getting corporate sponsorships and having trouble getting unstuck.

Don’t worry, what I’m sharing works with every level of business.

Like Attracts Like

Who is your business? What does it stand for? What are your Values? A mistake I’ve noticed in business is that we throw ourselves at anyone and everyone without a clear strategy of who is right for our business. We are told this because “in business we have to make money” we know all too well that “not all money is good money” – for untold reasons we are drawn to this mentality – though not our own. We can’t remain stuck here.

Whatever your mission, values, prospects, integrity, etc. it’s best to support someone who’s in the same field. There are exceptions to every rule, it’s possible to connect with a corporate sponsor who doesn’t do exactly what you do, but they complement or they know someone who can connect with you.

Issues can occur if you and the corporate sponsor don’t have anything in common or can’t agree on becoming partners. It’s not wrong to try to work on your differences. It’s more of a thone to try to reconcile with a person who can’t see your point of view and you can’t see theirs.

Approaching Potential corporate sponsors

Think of it like your friendship and relationships, how did you first meet? Or who spoke to whom first? And because of that one interaction it’s likely the pair of you are still friends today or married – it’s because they had the right approach.

Apply that to corporate sponsors:

  • Must know your identity + have confidence
  • Be human + relatable
  • Make your intentions knows about a brewing partnership
  • Give them a brief overview of your Business without being overbearing
  • Try to take the road less traveled as you’re getting to know your corporate sponsor
